Fethiye Culture House and Book Museum
Turkey’s first book museum welcomes visitors within the Fethiye Culture House, established by Fethiye Municipality. The museum is an important cultural center that showcases the journey of books and printed works from the past to the present.
Formation and Content of the Collection
The collection of the Fethiye Book Museum consists of printed works gathered over nearly 30 years by Dr. Ceyhun İrgil and Associate Professor Dr. Emel İrgil and their family. In addition to literary works, the museum also features a special collection of Cumhuriyet newspaper issues dating back to 1924.
This valuable newspaper collection was donated to the people of Fethiye by Nadir Nadi and Yunus Nadi, and it stands among the important documents that shed light on the history of the Turkish press.
Donations and Contributing Individuals
This unique collection of books, newspapers, and documents has been enriched by the contributions of many prominent individuals and institutions. Among them are collection donations by Sami Karaören, a writer and linguist from Fethiye who served for many years as the managing editor of Cumhuriyet newspaper, the Osman Şevki Olgun family, and Nur İlik, owner of the local Beşkaza Newspaper.
Library Establishment and Volunteer Support
The installation of the library within the museum was carried out by Süheyla Kaplan and her family. The classification, maintenance, and restoration of books sent from Fethiye and various regions of Turkey were carefully undertaken by volunteers from Fethiye. This process demonstrates that the museum was shaped by a strong sense of community solidarity and volunteerism.
